One of Edmonton’s most historic neighbourhoods, Glenora is distinguished by its mature elm trees, historic homes and proximity to MacKinnon Ravine and the North Saskatchewan River Valley. While many homes in the area are updated character homes, there are plenty of new infill options to choose from, including contemporary low-rise apartments. Notable local and nearby amenities include several schools, Government House Park, the Royal Mayfair Golf Club and a wealth of shops, services and restaurants – all just moments away in the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Community Profile

Glenora’s roots date back to 1869 when Malcolm Groat (Groat Road) staked out the area as part of a 900-acre claim. The land was then sold to real estate agent James Carruthers in 1906, who began plans for an exclusive real estate development. Carruthers placed a caveat on the land, stating all homes built in Glenora needed to be detached or semi-detached and could not cost less than $3,500. The area became a popular choice among affluent working professionals and their families, with many of their original homes still standing today.

Carruthers was highly influenced by the Garden City movement (popular at the time), which promoted high-end, low-density neighbourhoods highlighted by central parks and nearby green spaces. As a result, majestic Alexander Circle embodies many of the characteristics of Carruthers’ picture-perfect vision. Mature tree-lined streets that compliment the topography of the river valley and Groat Ravine (providing excellent views) and quiet cul-de-sacs also define the community.

Price Range and Housing Stock

Large, luxury-style single-family homes account for 90% of residences in Glenora. Though older, these properties have been meticulously maintained and feature one-of-a-kind architectural details. In fact, some of Edmonton’s most celebrated architects were used to design the neighbourhood’s many period revival, demonstration and post-war homes. In addition to some of the city’s first carriage homes, Glenora was also home to some of Edmonton’s first garages. (Source: Edmonton Historical Board)

Detached homes in the northern portion of Glenora offer a slight contrast to the area’s pre-war, two-storey homes. Constructed during the 1950s, north Glenora consists predominantly of renovated bungalows known for their luxury upgrades and oversized lots. Glenora is also seeing an increasing number of detached infill homes as many of the neighbourhood’s older properties give way to new construction. These brand-new luxury homes offer buyers the best of both worlds between modern convenience and old-world community charm.

Apartment-style condos account for all remaining residences in Glenora, with a few high and low-rise units located in the community’s south end. These may include everything from one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartments starting in the low 100s to luxury penthouses offering 3,000+ square feet of living space and panoramic downtown views.

Part of Glenora’s luxury status stems from its highly desirable location. As a result, home prices tend to fare higher than the Edmonton average:
