Bergman is one of three modern-day communities that comprised the former Town of Beverly. Along with Beacon Heights and Beverly Heights, Bergman’s roots date back to the town’s former coal mining industry, established in the early 1900s. Though the last mine was closed in the 1950s, Beverly continued to grow as a residential suburb until 1961, when the town (pop. 9,000) amalgamated with the greater City of Edmonton.

Did you know? Bergman was named after Gustave C. Bergman, the first mayor of the Town of Beverly. The town itself took its name from the Town of Beverly in Yorkshire, England.

While there are no commercial amenities located within Bergman proper, big-box retailers, restaurants, recreation venues, and more can be easily accessed via nearby arterial roads. These include Rundle Centre (grocers, restaurants, daycares, medical services, etc.), Clareview Town Centre and Londonderry Mall.

Parks and Recreation

Bergman is an outdoor lover’s delight thanks to its proximity to parks and open green spaces. These include Rundle Park (tennis courts, golf course, skating iceway, paddling centre, disc golf, tobogganing hills and more) and Hermitage Park. The neighbourhood also includes a centrally located park site, playground, and several pocket parks.

Bergman residents are served by the Beacon Heights Community League. Sports programs, skating, baseball, community coffee and Green Shack Programs are just a few of the many events and initiatives hosted by the league.

Did you know? The Edmonton Nordic Ski Club is one of Canada’s largest Nordic ski clubs, with over 650 members. The club was founded in 1978 and developed the trail systems in Goldstick and Goldbar Park. The parks feature over 10km of illuminated ski trails of varying challenge levels.

There are several schools located within walking distance of Bergman, including Beacon Heights Elementary School and St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School. Bergman is also situated a short distance from several private schools.

One Convenient Commute

Bergman is an oddly shaped neighbourhood defined by 50th Street to the west, Yellowhead Trail to the north, 34th Street to the east and 122nd Ave to the south. The bordering Yellowhead Highway offers excellent access to the greater City of Edmonton, Sherwood Park, and Fort Saskatchewan. Residents also enjoy a convenient commute to downtown Edmonton via nearby 118th Ave, accessible in under 15-minutes. Other nearby commuter routes include the east Anthony Henday, Highway 15, Fort Road and Wayne Gretzky Drive.

Bergman is also considered bicycle friendly and provides some transit opportunities, particularly along 50th Street. In addition, the Belvedere and Coliseum LRT Stations (Capital Line) are 10 minutes away.

Did you know? Edmonton’s Capital Line expansion will also see LRT service extended from southeast Edmonton’s Century Park station to Ellerslie Road.
