Dechene is a smaller community located in Lessard. First established in the 1980s, the neighbourhood boasts a quiet, family-friendly atmosphere and sits within proximity of popular West Edmonton amenities including West Edmonton Mall and the North Saskatchewan River Valley. Buyers are also attracted to Dechene due to the area’s affordable single-family homes, which are known for their exceptional value. 

Did you know? The community was named after Joseph Miville Dechene. Originally from Quebec, Dechene was among the first to homestead in Morinville (1892). Dechene moved to Edmonton a few years later to establish a news and tobacco store and served as member of the Alberta Legislature (1921 – 1940).

Parks and Recreation  

Dechene includes plenty of centrally located green space, highlighted by sports fields and a playground. The neighbourhood is also located within walking distance of the scenic North Saskatchewan River Valley (Patricia Ravine and Westridge Park), and the Wedgewood Ravine. Callingwood Park (located 5-minutes north) includes further recreational amenities such as playgrounds, a spray and skate park, sports fields, and an off-leash dog area. It also encompasses the Callingwood Twin Arenas.

Dechene residents are served by the Willowby Community League, situated in Ormsby Place. The league hosts a wide range of local events ranging from children’s preschool and playgroups to seniors’ clubs and sports programs.

Commuting From West Edmonton 

Dechene is a triangular-shaped community bounded by 184th Street to the west, Callingwood Road to the north, and Lessard Road to the east. Residents of this accessible neighbourhood enjoy a convenient commute to the greater capital region thanks to the nearby west Anthony Henday, as well as central Edmonton via Whitemud Drive. 

There are some transit routes operating throughout Dechene, providing access to two major transit centres – West Edmonton Mall Transit Centre and Lewis Farms Transit Centre. Lewis Farms will also represent the final stop along the West Valley LRT line.  

Did you know? Edmonton’s Valley Line is a 27km LRT track that will operate between Southeast Edmonton (Mill Woods) and West Edmonton (Lewis Farms).
