Calder is a residential neighbourhood located in Northwest Edmonton. A mature community defined by tree-lined streets and established amenities, Calder’s roots date back to 1910 and the arrival of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. At that time, Calder (or the Village of West Edmonton) was settled as a small railroad colony before it was annexed by the greater City of Edmonton in 1917. Today, Calder offers Edmonton home buyers a broad range of affordable home styles, catering to every taste, lifestyle, and budget.

Did you know? Calder was named after real estate developer Hugh Calder. Calder was the proprietor of the Calder Land Company and served as an alderman on Edmonton City Council between 1912 and 1916.

While few commercial amenities are located within Calder proper, the community sits within a short distance of several Northwest Edmonton shopping hubs. These include the Kensington Crossing/Palisades/Skyview Power Centres, where residents can access shops and services ranging from big box retailers and restaurants to grocers and medical services.

Plenty of Parks and Recreation  

Calder is home to a centrally located park and school site, featuring playgrounds, soccer and baseball fields, and plenty of open green space. Several small pocket parks can also be found throughout, as well as an active community league. Established in 1920, the Calder Community League is one of the city’s oldest and hosts a variety of resident-led programs, including family fun days, sports initiatives, a community garden and more.

Last but not least, Calder also sits kitty-corner to the Grand Trunk Fitness and Leisure Centre and an off-leash dog park. The leisure centre offers recreation and fitness for all ages, including a swimming pool, waterslide, fitness centre, indoor hockey arena, tennis courts, basketball courts and more.

Calder Schools

There are two schools in Calder – Calder Public School, serving kindergarten to Grade 6 and St. Edmund School, catering to kindergarten to Grade 9. Further educational opportunities, including secondary, private and additional non-secular options, can be found in the surrounding neighbourhoods. Post-secondary institutions, including NAIT, MacEwan University and NorQuest College, can be reached in under 15 minutes.

Commuting From Calder

Calder is defined by 127th Street to the west, 132nd Ave to the north, 113th A Street to the east and 127th Ave to the south. A commuter’s delight, Calder sits adjacent to the Yellowhead Highway and St. Albert Trail. Nearby 97th Street provides a straight shot to the downtown core (accessible in 15 minutes), while 127th Street connects directly to the north Anthony Henday.

Future development plans will see LRT access extended from NAIT to the Nakî Transit Centre and Park and Ride at Campbell Road.

Did you know? Edmonton’s future Metro LRT extension will include a stop along 113th A Street and 132nd Ave, in Calder’s far northeast corner.
