Community Spotlight: Prince Charles in Northwest Edmonton
October 13, 2021 7:00 amPrince Charles is a Central Northwest Edmonton neighbourhood located directly west of Edmonton’s old Municipal Airport. First annexed by the City of Edmonton in 1910, development of this established community was spurred by the expansion of the city’s electric streetcar line. Today, Prince Charles is a thriving neighbourhood known for its mature, tree-lined streets, affordable homes and proximity to fantastic Northwest Edmonton amenities.
Did you know? The community was formerly known as North Inglewood. This was until the local school was renamed in honour of Prince Charles of Wales in 1953. The name was eventually applied to the entire neighbourhood following a petition by the Prince Charles Community League.

Single-family homes are the most common form of residence in Prince Charles, accounting for roughly 80% of all homes within the neighbourhood. However, despite the community’s established status, development in Prince Charles has been ongoing over the last 100 years – resulting in a broad mix of home styles suited to every taste, lifestyle, and budget.
Pre and post-war bungalows offering plenty of character and modern upgrades are prevalent throughout the area, featuring an average of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, 1,000 square feet of cozy family living space and ultra-large lots.
Based on its one-of-a-kind location, Prince Charles has also seen an increasing number of infill homes, including contemporary two-story properties, trendy new townhomes and duplexes. Following single-family models, duplexes account for nearly all remaining home styles (20%) within Prince Charles, followed by a very small number of low-rise apartment condos.

Getting From Here to There
Prince Charles is bounded by 127th Street to the west, Yellowhead Trail to the north, 121st Street to the east and 118th Ave to the south. Yellowhead Trail is particularly convenient for residents needing access to the greater capital region, while nearby St. Albert Trail provides a streamlined commute to North Edmonton and St. Albert. Downtown is also accessible in 10-minutes via bisecting 124th Street and Jasper Ave.
Situated near Edmonton’s former streetcar line, Prince Charles has always been considered a transit-friendly neighbourhood. Today, several transit stops and routes can be found throughout this walkable neighbourhood, which also sits within 5-minutes of Edmonton’s Metro Line (NAIT station).
Did you know? Edmonton’s streetcar system was first established in 1908, running a total length of 19km. Over the years, the system expanded to nearly 100 km of track, servicing over 2.2 million passengers a year before it was replaced by busses in 1951.
