Edmonton Community Spotlight: Griesbach Featured Image

The Northwest Edmonton community of Griesbach holds a truly unique history in that it was first developed as a Canadian Forces Base (CFB Griesbach) in the early 1950s. The area remained home to military personal and their families until the early 2000s, when the army base was relocated north of the city to Sturgeon County.

Despite its established status, boasting mature trees and plenty of “old neighbourhood” charm, residential development didn’t begin in this Castle Downs community until the early 1990s – when the former military land was transferred to the Canada Lands Company. As such, Griesbach remains one of Edmonton’s “oldest new communities,” which continues to see new homes cropping up within its boundaries today.

Did you know? William Antrobus Griesbach served as Mayor of Edmonton from 1906-1907. He was also a decorated soldier as well as a member of the Senate of Canada and the House of Commons

Griesbach Home Styles

As we mentioned above, residential development in Griesbach did not begin until the 1990s/early 2000s. As such, real estate opportunities consist of newer homes of all styles and price points, offering many of the features and finishes modern Edmonton home buyers have come to expect from a developing community.

Single-family homes account for nearly half of all home styles in this flourishing neighbourhood and consist of roomy front-attached models, laned homes and large luxury properties. As a means of preserving Griesbach’s mature charm and historical status, many new homes in the neighbourhood are modelled after classic Tudor, Victorian and Colonial designs.

Affordable new duplexes and townhomes are also widespread throughout the area, followed by a few low-maintenance apartment-style condo developments.
