Historic Queen Mary Park is an established community located in central Edmonton, just minutes away from the city’s vibrant downtown core. Formerly owned by the Hudson Bay Company (HBC) in the late 1800s, Queen Mary Park became the site of several different land uses (including farmland and an HBC owned golf course) until Edmonton’s population exploded shortly after the Second World War.

Did you know? Queen Mary Park is also home to the Edmonton Cemetery. Not only does the cemetery contain the city’s oldest and most architecturally diverse monuments, but it also houses the Field of Honour – a resting place for over 600 Edmonton veterans. (source: City of Edmonton)

Queen Mary Park Home Styles 

With so many soldiers returning to Edmonton after WWII, Queen Mary Park saw a rapid increase in residential development, focusing on single-family homes. Since then, many of the houses constructed in the early 1950s, 60s and 70s have been replaced in favour of modern infill.

While there are a few single-family home options to choose from (upgraded, post-WWII bungalows on large lots, in particular), most of the neighbourhood’s older detached properties have given way to contemporary low-rise apartment-style condos/walk-up apartments. As such, Queen Mary Park has become a popular choice among first-time buyers looking for an affordable home, paired with convenient access to walkable amenities and downtown Edmonton.

Much of this new development has also been attributed to the recently completed downtown arena, which has spurred the construction of several condo buildings in the community’s south end.

As mentioned above, Queen Mary Park is becoming an increasingly popular choice among low-maintenance home buyers due to its proximity to countless amenities. Besides the many shops, services and restaurants along 107th Ave, a large commercial district can be found flanking the community’s west end. This includes Holland Plaza, home to some of Edmonton’s most famed local shops and eateries, including the Local Omnivore and The Wine Gallery.

Queen Mary Park also sits moments away from Edmonton’s celebrated Brewery District (featuring several restaurants, services, grocers and more) as well as Oliver Village and Oliver Square East and West (big-box retailers, grocers, restaurants, banking institutions and a multitude of services). Several pocket parks exist throughout the neighbourhood, which also features two large school-sites (soccer fields, playgrounds, basketball courts), a community garden and an active community league. Even better, the North Saskatchewan River Valley (including Victoria Park, Alberta Legislature Grounds and Government House Park) also sits just a short distance away, providing ample opportunity for bike rides, trail walks, family picnics, skating, festivals and numerous other outdoor activities.

A commuter’s delight, Queen Mary Park is bordered by 111th Ave to the north and 109th Street to the east. 111th Ave is incredibly convenient for those needing to access the greater City of Edmonton as it connects with several major thoroughfares, including Groat Road (St. Albert Trail, the Yellowhead Hwy and Stony Plain Road) and 170th Street via Mayfield Road.

109th Street also delivers streamlined access to both downtown Edmonton and the University of Alberta, as well as the city’s southwest end (as far as 61st Ave, NW).

Lastly, Queen Mary Park boasts a well-rated walkability and transit score, with several stops located throughout the neighbourhood. The Kingsway/ Royal Alex Transit Centre and LRT station also sit just a 5-minute drive (20-minute walk) directly to the northeast.

Did you know? With the rise of the automobile, Queen Mary Park was one of the first Edmonton neighbourhoods to depart from the city’s long-established grid system. The new “town planned” approach (now an international norm) saw new communities developed with restricted entrances to disperse traffic, and cul-de-sac facing detached and semi-detached single-family homes.
