6 Questions To Ask Yourself When Choosing a Neighbourhood
June 26, 2019 7:00 amFrom Spruce Grove to Fort Saskatchewan, the capital region is home to hundreds of great communities. But with so many amazing neighbourhoods to choose from, how do you know which one will be best for you? Here are 6 questions you’ll want to ask yourself when trying to make your decision.
1) What kind of home do I want?
Of course, the type of home you’re looking for will be a huge determining factor when it comes to finding the right community. Some Edmonton neighbourhoods cater to a wide range of styles such as apartment-style condos, townhomes and duplexes while others are solely comprised of single-family dwellings. Knowing which home style you want (and can afford) is the first step to narrowing down your neighbourhood options.
2) What are my future plans?
Sure, a one-bedroom condo in trendy downtown Edmonton may sound great now, but what about in a few years’ time? Are you planning on getting married or starting a family? If the answer is yes, then you’ll want to choose a community that will meet your future needs as well as your current ones. This includes proximity to schools and other family-friendly amenities.
3) How close do I want to be to work?
Whether you rely on your own vehicle or transit, no one likes a lengthy commute! So, when you’re exploring potential new places to call home, be sure to consider your travel time. Are there bus stops within easy walking distance? Are there major arterial roads nearby such as the Anthony Henday, Yellowhead or Whitemud? If you’re considering a newer Edmonton neighbourhood, ask your REALTOR® about future roadway and transit plans.
4) Are there other amenities nearby?
Do you love to be active? Then a community near one of Edmonton’s many great recreation centres will likely be important. If you love to catch up with friends after work or on the weekend, a neighbourhood that sits within a short distance to pubs, restaurants and other entertainment venues is key. Busy parents will appreciate having quick access to stores and services and children will enjoy having close proximity to playgrounds, bike paths and parks.
5) Are there any red flags?
The community as a whole will have a direct impact on the value of your property. What are the local crime stats? Are there a lot of houses for rent, for sale or in disrepair? Are public spaces (parks, roadways, sidewalks etc.) well taken care of? Here again, be sure to ask your Edmonton REALTOR®. As experts in their field, they’ll be able to provide you with the information and insight you need.
6) Is the neighbourhood loud or smelly?
Yep, loud or smelly! While this sounds like an odd question at first, it’s an important one for ensuring your future happiness! For instance, your new home could be on a flight path or next to a busy highway. Maybe there’s an industrial or waste treatment facility nearby (imagine being downwind of THAT at a family barbecue). Ask your REALTOR® about visiting the area during different times of day – you’ll be far more likely to notice any “off-putting” sounds or aromas.
